Science News for Students reports that on-task use of mobile devices can be very productive in high school classes, whereas off-task use tends to adversely affect work and grades. An excerpt from a Boston College survey of high school teachers in the USA: “In general, teachers felt these devices could improve learning, the Boston College team reported last April at a meeting of the American Educational Research Association. But teachers at that high school also were worried about their students becoming distracted.” In a controlled study, students who were permitted to text related only to on-task work did 70% better than students who were allowed to text freely.
